Janakpuri is one of the biggest planned colonies in West Delhi, laid out in lettered blocks beside Najafgarh Road and Pankha Road. It is family flats and private houses for the most part, with a District Centre for shopping and a straight metro line to the domestic airport.
The DDA built Janakpuri as lettered blocks, each split into numbered parts such as A-3 or C-1, with DDA flats, private kothis and small parks in between. The addresses look alike from one block to the next, so a driver with only a house number can end up on the wrong side of the colony. Name a landmark as well. Mata Chanan Devi Hospital in C-1 and the District Centre are the two that every auto and cab driver in West Delhi knows, and Pankha Road on the Dabri side is easy to find too.
Janakpuri East and Janakpuri West are both on the Blue Line, the stops that come right after Tilak Nagar on the way out to Dwarka. Janakpuri West is also where the Magenta Line begins, and it runs to Terminal 1 of the airport in about fifteen minutes, so this is a common base for men who fly in and out of Delhi often. From our Naraina side a car reaches most of Janakpuri in twenty-five to thirty minutes through Mayapuri, which makes it one of the shortest trips we make, even in evening traffic. Pankha Road and the Dabri Mor crossing are the slow points around office closing time, so a 7 PM booking needs more notice than a midnight one.
Nearly every Janakpuri booking is a home visit, and the colony keeps family hours. Many blocks close their gates after 10 PM and leave a guard who asks each visitor where they are going. Tell him to expect a guest, or walk out to the gate yourself, and she comes straight up with you. Builder floors without a guard are simpler, but the stairs are shared, so leave the door open for her rather than making her ring the bell.
